LAND USE & BIODIVERSITY

As the world’s population increases, so has the pressure for more agricultural growth to sustain human population increases. This has driven habitat degradation and habitat loss as is being observed with the clearing of the Amazon rainforests for more farm land. The immediate impact in changing in a significant manner land use is the greatest threat to biodiversity leading to the accelerated extinction of animal and plant species.

A wide range of solutions are currently being employed to begin to address and reduce the impact of land use conversion and destruction. Solutions such as creating natural preserves, restoring habitat environments and most importantly government legislation to enhance the availability of sustainable products are all steps now taken or should be taken to protect the planet’s biodiversity.
